ROUGH RIDERS
50th Anniversary of the organization of the Rough Riders, a nickname given to the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War.
One regiment of U.S. cavalry volunteers recruited by Theodore Roosevelt, and composed of cowboys, miners, law-enforcement officials, and college athletes, among others. Their colorful and often unorthodox exploits received extensive publicity in the American press.
