On February 14, 2015, Soane Patita Paini Mafi, appointed by Pope Francis,
became the first ever Cardinal from Tonga; and, as Cardinal Mafi,
became the youngest member of the College of Cardinals.
Mafi was one of 20 new cardinals from 18 different countries due in part by
Pope Francis' effort to raise world awareness that the church is truly global.
