Intrepid (Union Army Balloon Corps, aerial reconnaissance during the American Civil War) to the Explorer II (high-altitude balloon launched on November 11, 1935, reached a record altitude of 72,395 ft - into the stratosphere. Launched at 8:00 am in South Dakota).

The first un-tethered manned hot air balloon flight was performed on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France.
