First orbital flight by John H Glenn on February 20, 1960, the date of issuance of this stamp.

Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. Six manned flights 1961-63 with the objective to orbit a manned spacecraft around earth and investigate man's ability to function in space.
