  American desert, 120,000 square miles, California through Arizona. The stamp pane illustrates 25 species of animals and plants found in the desert. A region of scant rainfall, plants (cacti, Joshua tree, ironwood and mesquite) and wildlife call home (mountain lion, geckos, gophers, woodpeckers, doves).
The Postal Service began issuance of the panels in 1972. The panel contains the stamp issue, reproduction of steel engravings and background information of the stamp subject.
